Blood donation is a critical service that saves millions of lives. However, many people are unaware that different types of blood donations serve distinct medical purposes. At Vijaya Sri Blood Centre, Khammam, we educate and encourage donors to choose the donation type that best suits their eligibility and willingness.
1. Whole Blood Donation
What It Is:
Whole blood donation is the most common type. It involves collecting approximately 350–450 ml of blood, which includes red blood cells, plasma, and platelets.
Who Needs It?
Trauma and accident victims
Patients undergoing surgery
Individuals with severe anemia
Donation Frequency:
Once every three months for men and four months for women.

2. Platelet Donation (Apheresis)
What It Is:
Platelet donation involves extracting platelets and returning other blood components to the donor. This process is done through a machine called an apheresis device.
Who Needs It?
Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy
Patients with platelet disorders
Organ transplant recipients
Donation Frequency:
Every two weeks (up to 24 times a year).
3. Plasma Donation
What It Is:
Plasma donation involves separating plasma (the liquid part of blood) and returning the rest to the donor. Plasma is rich in proteins that aid in blood clotting and immune responses.
Who Needs It?
Burn victims
Patients with clotting disorders
Individuals with immune deficiencies
Donation Frequency:
Every two weeks.

4. Double Red Cell Donation
What It Is:
This donation involves collecting two units of red blood cells while returning plasma and platelets to the donor. It helps maximize the donation’s impact.
Who Needs It?
Patients with severe anemia
Accident and surgery patients
Sickle cell disease patients
Donation Frequency:
Every four months.
